US agents have arrested 44 elected officials and Jewish rabbis in New Jersey in a huge anti-corruption sweep across the state.

Charges of extortion, bribery, money laundering and human organ trafficking were stunning even for a state long notorious for official corruption and organised crime.

Five rabbis were among suspects, along with the mayors of Hoboken, Secaucus and Ridgefield, the Jersey City deputy mayor and council president, two state assembly members, and numerous other politicians, prosecutors said.

New Jersey corruption

Two New Jersey mayors and several rabbis have been arrested in a federal investigation into public corruption and money laundering.

Acting US Attorney for the district of New Jersey Ralph Marra told a press conference the sweep demonstrated “the pervasive nature of public corruption in this state”.

“The politicians willingly put themselves up for sale,” he said, while “clergymen cloak their extensive criminal activity behind a facade of rectitude.”

Raids began shortly after dawn on Thursday, officials said, targeting a who’s who of state leaders.

Television footage showed FBI and tax agents bringing a stream of handcuffed suspects, including rabbis wearing traditional Orthodox Jewish garb, into custody in the city of Newark. Other suspects were shown being put onto a bus.

The sweep was believed to be one of the biggest such actions ever in a state long associated with corruption, and famous as the setting of the hit Mafia television drama the “Sopranos.”

Officials said the arrests were part of an ongoing 10 year probe into statewide corruption code-named “Bid Rig.”

Democratic State Governor Jon Corzine said “the scale of corruption we’re seeing as this unfolds is simply outrageous and cannot be tolerated.”

“Any corruption is unacceptable — anywhere, anytime, by anybody,” he said in a statement.

FBI officials painted a picture of brazen criminality.

The money laundering ring allegedly stretched from New Jersey and New York to Israel and Switzerland, while politicians easily exploited loopholes in state law to disguise bribes as campaign contributions.

Although New Jersey is more famous for a history of Italian Mafia families, it was Jewish clergy who allegedly played a central role in the crime network.

Authorities raided several synagogues and among those arrested was the chief rabbi of Syrian Jews in the United States.

One rabbi, Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, was charged with conspiring to broker the sale of a human kidney for transplant.

Marra said Rosenbaum’s “business was to entice vulnerable people to give up a kidney for $US10,000 ($A12,300), which he would turn around and sell for 160,000 dollars.”

He’d allegedly been peddling kidneys for a decade.

The dramatic crackdown came as Chris Christie, a crusading former US lawyer, stepped up his campaign against Corzine in an election this November.

Christie, a Republican, previously won fame for his relentless and successful prosecution of political corruption in New Jersey.

Corzine is battling widespread dissatisfaction with his performance as the state reels from the national recession, spending cuts, and furloughs for state employees.

FBI agent Weysan Dun was quick to deny any political motivation behind the arrests, a majority of which appeared to involve Democrats, rather than Republicans.

“This investigation has transcended multiple administrations of both political parties,” he said.

What is Guardianship?
Guardianship is the process where the assets of a person have been declared disabled or incompetent, incapacitated where those assets are overseen by the court. The court puts someone in charge, the judge names a person and they are called the guardian who manages assets for the person who is incapacitated. So if your husband or wife has had a stroke or if some illness like that where they can no longer make decisions for themselves then you may be put in charge of their assets which sounds funny to say because aren’t they really both of your assets? Yes and no. If there were assets in that person’s name alone, so if your husband had his own checking account with no one else’s name on it the judge may very well put you in charge of that money, but he’s also going to want accounting of what you did with that money.
If your home is in both names, homes are different. They are seen as real estate as special in the law. If your spouse has a stroke or serious incapacity and the judge puts you in charge of their estate, their guardianship estate then you are expected to account for what you did with their half of the house. This is something that is really inconvenient and unnatural for their spouses to do a report on what they did with their own home to a judge. So avoiding guardianship is really something that we try to do. Sometimes we can’t avoid it and sometimes it really is a good tool to use, but if there is a way to avoid it we usually do that. Having your home in a living trust is one of the easier ways to avoid probate –excuse me, to avoid guardianship and we really recommend that you avoid guardianship if possible.

Made for Each Other is a 1939 drama film directed by John Cromwell and produced by David O. Selznick. It stars Carole Lombard and James Stewart as a couple who get married after only knowing each other very briefly.

John Mason is a young, somewhat timid attorney in New York City. He has been doing his job well, and he has a chance of being made a partner in his law firm, especially if he marries Eunice, the daughter of his employer, Judge Doolittle. However, John meets Jane during a business trip, and they fall in love and marry immediately. John’s mother is disappointed with his choice, and an important court trial forces him to cancel the honeymoon. He wins the case, but by that time Judge Doolittle has chosen John’s kowtowing coworker as the new partner.

Jane encourages John to demand a raise and a promotion, but with finances tightened by the Depression, Doolittle requires that all employees accept pay cuts. After Jane has a baby, John becomes discouraged by his unpaid bills and by tension between Jane and his mother, who lives with them in their small apartment.

On New Year’s Eve, 1938–39, the baby is rushed to the hospital with pneumonia. It will die within hours unless a serum is delivered by plane from Salt Lake City. Doolittle agrees to provided funding to deliver the serum, but with a storm raging, and with a wife and children to consider, the pilot refuses to fly. John pleads over the telephone, and the pilot’s unmarried friend takes the job. The new pilot almost crashes in the mountains, and the plane’s engine catches fire a short distance from New York. The pilot is also injured and knocked unconscious after jumping from the plane and parachuting to safety, but he crawls to a nearby farm house after he comes to. The farmer sees the box containing the serum and telephones the hospital, and the baby is saved. A few years later, John is made partner at the law firm and his son has just spoken his first words.

Carole Lombard (October 6, 1908 — January 16, 1942) was an American actress. She was particularly noted for her comedic roles in the screwball comedies of the 1930s. Lombard’s career was cut short when she died at the age of 33 in the crash of TWA Flight 3.

James Maitland “Jimmy” Stewart (May 20, 1908 — July 2, 1997) was an American film and stage actor, known for his distinctive voice and his everyman persona. Over the course of his career, he starred in many films widely considered classics and was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one in competition and receiving one Lifetime Achievement award. He was a major MGM contract star. He also had a noted military career and was a World War II and Vietnam War veteran, who rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Air Force Reserve.

Throughout his seven decades in Hollywood, Stewart cultivated a versatile career and recognized screen image in such classics as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Philadelphia Story, Harvey, It’s a Wonderful Life, Shenandoah, Rear Window, Rope, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Shop Around the Corner, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Vertigo.
